Owing to limits on accommodation, enrolment in any year is restricted to 180 students (6 classes) in any year. In accordance with government policy, preference is given to local students and a buffer is maintained for new arrivals living in the area.
Where non-local applications exceed the number of places available in any year, factors such as sibling enrolments, curriculum choices, distance from the school and the availability of other schools will be considered. A waiting list for non-local enrolments will be based on the criteria outlined. Application and selection by merit, irrespective of residency will determine placement in the Gifted and Talented Program (one class per year). International students who wish to enrol at St Ives High School must apply through the Department of Education & Training's International Students Centre. Their enrolment will be considered on their competency in English and availability of ESL support, availability of space within the year group, curriculum choices, distance from the school, gender balance within the school and the availability of other schools.
